Corrections Policy

Corrections Policy

The Manchester Guardian is committed to accuracy, transparency, and accountability in our reporting.

Journalism involves gathering and reporting information as events develop. Despite reasonable efforts to verify information before publication, mistakes can occur. When we determine that we have published a significant factual error, we will work to correct it clearly and promptly.

OUR REVIEW PROCESS

Receiving a correction request does not automatically mean published information is inaccurate.

The Manchester Guardian will review reasonable correction requests and may examine:

  • Original reporting notes
  • Audio or video recordings
  • Public records
  • Government documents
  • Interview material
  • Photographs
  • Official statements
  • Other relevant evidence

When necessary, we may contact the person requesting the correction, the reporter or contributor involved, or other relevant sources.

FACTUAL CORRECTIONS

When we determine that a significant factual error has been published, we will correct the information.

Depending on the nature of the error, the correction may include:

  • Updating the article
  • Correcting a headline
  • Correcting a name, date, location, number, or quotation
  • Adding missing context
  • Adding a correction notice or editor’s note
  • Correcting information shared through our digital platforms when appropriate

TRANSPARENCY

Minor typographical, grammatical, formatting, or stylistic changes may be corrected without a formal correction notice when those changes do not alter the meaning of the story.

Significant factual corrections should be handled transparently.

When appropriate, a correction notice may explain what information was incorrect and what has been changed.

UPDATES ARE NOT ALWAYS CORRECTIONS

News develops.

An article may be updated when additional information becomes available even when the original reporting was accurate at the time of publication.

In those circumstances, the article may be identified as updated rather than corrected.

OPINIONS AND DISAGREEMENTS

A disagreement with reporting, criticism, commentary, or an opinion does not necessarily constitute a factual error.

Corrections are intended to address demonstrably inaccurate factual information.

Opinion and editorial content will be clearly identified as such whenever appropriate.

ONLINE AND SOCIAL MEDIA

When a significant factual error appears in content distributed through our website or social media platforms, The Manchester Guardian may correct, update, or clarify the information on the appropriate platform.

We generally will not remove accurate reporting simply because the subject of a story disagrees with the coverage or finds the information unfavorable.

REMOVAL REQUESTS

Published material will not ordinarily be removed solely upon request.

Requests involving significant privacy, safety, legal, or ethical concerns will be considered individually.

Corrections, updates, clarifications, or additional reporting may be more appropriate than removing an article entirely.

OUR COMMITMENT

Trust is earned through accuracy and transparency.

When The Manchester Guardian gets something wrong, our responsibility is not to hide the mistake. Our responsibility is to examine it, correct it when warranted, and continue working to provide Manchester and Coffee County with reliable local information.
